Optimize your Tweets for better presentation of your Blog

Using twitter to expand your fan base and stir up conversation around your blog is all about mastering a few basic rules.

Hash It Out

It’s easy to optimize your Twitter posts by using the same keywords that would be used in your blog’s SEO searches. When tweeting, you use hashtags (#) to make keywords searchable. When choosing your keywords, consider the content of your blog. To start, choose three subjects. For example: #insurance, #business and #insurancequotes.

You may notice that one of your hashtags has only a few results. While this means you won’t receive a lot of passive hits (people searching that particular hashtag), you will have the opportunity to promote that hashtag. We’ll talk about Twitter campaigns later.

Follow three competitors in each subject whose tweets are engaging or informational. Monitor these accounts for inspiration in both content and execution. You can also “retweet” the information to your own followers. Link your Twitter to your blog’s Facebook page for maximum optimization.

Diversify your Content

Now that you have your subject matter, you can begin to use twitter to publicize your blog. Each time you update your blog, include the link in your Tweet. Some people use brackets to show original content.

In addition to original posts, use Twitter to post information from other sources. Think creatively about what kind of subject matter would interest your readers. Even if you write about business insurance, remember that some people who aren’t in your immediate audience would respond to a human interest story involving insurance instead of a consumer-driven piece about saving money.

As you diversify your content, you will see your audience expand. Try to update your Twitter three times a day. It might seem overwhelming at first, but frequency is a huge part of being successful on Twitter. The average Twitter feed will be constantly updating, which means your Tweet at 9a.m. probably won’t be seen by the user who plugs in at noon. Right now, the best time to post on Twitter is between 1p.m. and 3p.m. according to Mashable.

Diversity is more than subject matter. Remember that media comes in all shapes and sizes these days. You can post YouTube videos, TED Talks and Vimeos. Take your phone with you to update your Twitter on the go. For bloggers who write about their personal lives, this is a great way to share in-the-moment thoughts, experiences and photos.

Start the Conversation

Remember, Twitter is a two-sided conversation. The goal is to engage as many readers as possible, and while many people are reluctant to comment on a blog post, they will be willing to participate in a conversation via twitter. At the end of each blog post, leave your Twitter name and let readers know they can reach you and receive updates by following you.

Hashtag or Twitter campaigns are also a great way to engage readers. A lot of Twitter campaigns fail because demand too much from their audiences, but in essence a Twitter campaign is really simple.

A Twitter campaign promotes a hashtag to get people plugged into a conversation.

Let’s say it’s #insurancequotes. No company is using that hashtag aggressively right now, so it’s a perfect opportunity for an insurance blog to engage readers. It could be something as simple as “Post two companies to #insurancequotes and we’ll compare them for you!” Once you launch a Twitter campaign, as long as the hashtag is dominated by your blog, you can keep returning to it.

Keep it simple and don’t get discouraged if you don’t receive a lot of feedback immediately. Remember, this is about building a readership, and Rome wasn’t built in a day.
