You know, writing inspiration can take many forms. You might be surprised by what can inspire you. As for myself, I have been stuck in a writing rut many times before. I have days where I just feel like updating my blog is the very last thing I want to do. And yet, I know how important it is to keep my blog up and regularly post to it. So, when I get writer’s block and just cannot think of a single thing to write about, I always look for inspiration in various places. Here are ten places that I usually look to for writing inspiration:
- Old posts – The first place I go to for easy inspiration is things I have already written before. I take a look at some of the old topics, especially ones I have not written about for a long time. Do I know more about it now? Have there been updates or progress made on this topic? Do I have something new to add? These are all good questions to ask when looking at your old work. Sometimes you have new information that should have been written about long ago, you have just forgotten to do it. Old writing can be a valuable source of new content for your blog.
- News – If I am still stuck or have nothing new I can think of to write about, I take a look at the news. Weird news words best for me, but popular news topics like controversies and celebrities make great blog post topics that will garner lots of attention. If you have a new take on the news, by all means feel free to share your views. You may not want to be too controversial to avoid offending some of your readers, but almost any topic can be discussed in a calm, rational, and non-offensive way. Weird news is also a lot of fun to share as you get the most interesting comments from people about it. Weird news is usually something that no one else has seen before, so that is a plus also. You are providing great content to people without having to magically concoct it.
- Pictures –Sometimes I get tired of reading and just want to tune out for a little while. That is when I head to Pinterest and other photo heavy sites. Looking through pictures is an easy and relaxing way to let your mind cool down after working for a long time. However, pictures can also inspire you. I do not know how many times I have run across an image that has inspired me to write a blog post, Sometimes the image will have almost nothing to do with the topic of the blog post I write, but it just inspired my thinking and opened my mind to new ideas. I also get inspired by art I see though that medium. I do not have time to visit art galleries or museums, but through these images I can get a taste of what people are doing in the art world. I love seeing and writing about unusual art and cultural diversity that I come across through photos.

- Social Media –Everyone loves to hang out on Twitter and Facebook. There is always something new to see and talk about. I have found lots of interesting news items on these sites and often can tell the intensity of the debate by how often the subject pops up in my feed. By reading to other people’s opinions on the subject, you can get a grasp on why they are upset or concerned and what they would like to know more about. Then, in your writing, you can either do some research to clarify misunderstandings or just write your opinion on the subject. This is a great way to get a lot of hits to your blog.
- Hobbies –Sometimes I like to write about my hobbies, even ones I do not participate in. Let’s say I have an interest in running or farming or knitting. I have done some research on it, maybe bought a few things to start it, but I never have actually gotten around to doing it. That does not mean I can’t write about it! I can write about how hard it is to start, what the obstacles I’ve faced have been, what my fears are, and even why I think I will not succeed. Alternately, I can write about hobbies I have done in the past but no longer do. Maybe you played an instrument in high school, but you do not play anymore. You can still write about how it felt to produce music and what joys and sorrows it created in your life. Current hobbies are always great to write on. Even if you just started you can write about what you are experiencing and what goals you have for yourself.
- Personal life –Family, friends and even pets make for great blog posts. Of course you do not want to get too personal so that your safety and privacy are compromised, but you can share what is going on in your life. Do you have kids? Tell us about them! Their problems in school, their behavioral issues, their eating habits, and what you do as a parent to help them. Maybe you have a dog. How did you train it? Does it eat only certain foods? Does it do tricks? All these real life examples make your blog feel more authentic and help your readers to really connect with you on a personal level.
- The past –History is always a great thing to blog about, and personal history is the best. How did you feel during times of great disaster? How old were you when important things happened? How did you relate to your siblings and parents? What did you do in the past that you do not do now? What was your childhood like and how does that affect you as an adult? You can even write about historical events like they happened today. What would your reaction be to the Civil War? Or the American Revolution? What would the effects of current technology have on those battles or current medicine?
- Dreams and goals –Talking about your dreams and goals can inspire others. Even if you have no idea how you will accomplish them, your goals can still help people to think about their lives and their own goals. Better yet, if you are working towards your goals in concrete ways, people can use that information to improve their own lives. Think of yourself as a motivational writer. By sharing who you are and how you want your future to be, you can help others to make a better future for themselves also.

- Fiction –If you simply cannot stand the thought of writing a regular blog post, then try writing fiction. Some blogs can’t do that sort of thing, but even fiction based loosely on your blog’s topic might be a hit with readers. If you have a blog on technology, then an end of the world robots take over fiction piece might fit. Or if your blog is on making money then a fictional account of hitting it big on Wall Street might be just the ticket. Fiction is a great way to break up monotony and get the creative juices flowing.
- Poetry – For a shorter and more artistic blog post, why not try poetry? Not everyone can write a great poem, but most people can write something that really expresses what they are thinking and feeling. Play around with composition, rhyme, meter, and punctuation to really make your poem flow the way you want it too. You might be surprised at how well it turns out.
