HOW TO: Use Pay-Per-Click Advertising to Promote Your Blog

Pay-per-click advertising, or PPC, is a great way to grow your blog. It can help you drive traffic, build your opt-in e-mail list and build social media followers.

Here’s how it works: You pay for display ads through search engines like Google, and any time someone clicks on that ad, you pay a certain amount. How much you pay depends on a number of factors, including the keywords you chose to display that ad, how many other people are competing for that keyword, and how much you have bid (agreed to pay) to compete for that keyword.

Here’s how you can use pay-per-click advertising to promote your blog:

Choose Multiple Networks

Google is the gold standard in PPC advertising. The search giant has the most users and is capable of sending you the most traffic. However, that means you’ll also pay a premium for your ads and will be competing against a lot of other site owners.

If you’re on a budget, Bing is a good alternative. There is still a significant user base on the site, and you’ll pay much less for your ads. Facebook is also a good option. The social networking giant also lets you target your ads more precisely than Google or Bing, so you can be sure you are reaching the customers you
want.

Target Your Ads

You have various options for targeting your ads depending on the source you use for advertising. Google and Bing both have limited options, including country, language, search or display networks, and the device used. However, Facebook will let you target your ads by gender, age, interests, and much more.

The more you can target your ads, the more effective you can be sure your advertising is by reaching the right customers.

Set Goals

What do you hope to accomplish with your ads? Do you want to increase sales? Grow your list? Increase your social media followers? Understanding your goals will help you to write effective ads and choose the right targeting strategy.

You should also use your goals to establish a budget. PPC ads can just keep running as long as people are clicking, potentially costing you hundreds or thousands of dollars per day. However, you can set a daily budget so that your ads stop running once you have reached that amount. Determine your estimated return on investment (what percentage of visitors are likely to make a sale and what that average sale would be) in order to determine how much you should be spending on your ad campaign.

If used effectively, pay-per-click advertising can help you grow your blog fast. You can get more readers, more subscribers, and more social media followers – all of which will lead to more sales in the end.
